West 8 has completed Longwood Gardens’ first-ever physical master plan, a visionary document tasked with transforming Longwood Gardens over the next 40-years into one of the Great Gardens of the World. Longwood has distinguished itself as both a historic resource and an exemplar of the highest levels of horticultural creativity, display and research.
West 8's ultimate master plan is ambitious: to create a great garden of the world, to solve short term problems, to accommodate growing visitation and expanded programs through new architecture and systems, to lay out a plan for logistics, circulation and infrastructure, to meet the highest standards of sustainability and stewardship, and to reaffirm the relevance of gardens in America. West 8's vision allows Longwood Gardens to embody what unifies all Great Gardens—it will be a living work, inspired by the spirit of the place, cultivated at the scale of the gardener’s hand and acquiring its unique character over the long term. Building upon the success of the master plan, Longwood Garden's has contracted us to work on a variety of the next steps outlines in the vision, including: garden renovation, custom furnishing, and in-depth design studies.
In much the same way, we need to be ambitious and not only shape Mt. Cuba Center Garden's vision for today, but cultivate a long-term, sustainable framework that flourishes for generations. The Longwood Gardens Master Plan thinks big, thinking holistically, and thinks long-term.
